How often should I update my site?
The answer to this is 2 parts:
first at least once a week and then at least every 2 years, let me explain.
Once a Week
One of the ways Google ranks sites is based on when they were last updated. If you are not making changes to your site on a regular basis, your site will begin to drop in the rankings. But think about it from the customer side, if they go to your site 2-3 times in a month and nothing is different on the home page, do you really think they will go any further?
The updates can be simple things like news or blog posts, pictures from a new project, a trade show you are going to. Just tell your story, what's going on. While your making those updates, make sure you post them on your social sites too with a link back to your site. Someone may not come to your site everyday, but there is a pretty good chance they are looking at a social site everyday.
Every 2 Years
This is how often you should re-skin and update the code on your site. Technology is changing so fast, think about it, an iPad didn't exist 2 years ago. Sites we do now are getting bigger around 1,000 px wide, you can tell a site is older just based on the width, we use to do sites 800 px wide and really old ones are 640px wide. The monitors are getting bigger, so are the sites. Think about it from a marketing side, how often did you update a brochure or catalog, if the answer is yearly, so should your site. Your site is now your brochure. Many of the resorts we work with we do a yearly re-skin. For the customers it marks the start of the next season and gets them excited.
